Verona Day Trip: The Perfect One-Day Itinerary

THE VENETO JOURNAL   /   3 MIN READ

Bassano del Grappa doesn’t get talked about as much as Venice or Verona, and locals are mostly fine with that. It’s a working town built around a river and a bridge, with two historic grappa distilleries and a genuinely lovely old center – the kind of place that rewards an unhurried afternoon more than a checklist.

At a Glance

  • Distance from Piazzola sul Brenta: about 19 miles
  • Travel time: ~34 min by car (a car genuinely makes this one easier)
  • The main event: Ponte Vecchio, Palladio’s wooden bridge over the Brenta
  • Best time to visit: spring, for the white asparagus season – or any weekday evening, for the bridge-side spritz ritual

Getting to Bassano del Grappa from Piazzola sul Brenta

Here I’ll be straight with you: this is the one day trip on this site where I’d actually recommend driving. There’s no direct bus from Piazzola sul Brenta – the E021 line that runs Padova-Cittadella-Bassano passes near Piazzola at the Vaccarino stops, but connecting from there isn’t especially convenient. By car, it’s a direct 34-minute drive, about 19 miles.

Palladio Again - Yes, Really

If you’ve read our Vicenza guide, you already know Andrea Palladio is Vicenza’s adopted son. His signature also turns up here: the Ponte Vecchio, Bassano’s covered wooden bridge over the Brenta, is his design – rebuilt more than once after wars and floods over the centuries, most recently after the First World War, when the Alpini (Italy’s mountain infantry) rebuilt it and have looked after it ever since. It’s the town’s postcard image for good reason.

Bassano del Grappa in a Day

Morning: Start at the Ponte Vecchio itself, then head into the old center around Piazza Garibaldi and Piazza Libertà – porticoed streets, frescoed palazzi, and a genuinely unhurried pace. The Museo Civico, in a former Franciscan convent on Piazza Garibaldi, holds the town’s art and archaeology collections if you want an hour indoors.

Midday – if you’re here in spring, order the asparagus: Bassano’s white asparagus (asparagi di Bassano, grown blanched underground) is a genuine local specialty, in season roughly April through June. Ristorante Il Garibaldi is a proper traditional trattoria for it, alongside bigoli all’anitra (duck ragu pasta) and baccalà alla vicentina.

Afternoon: Visit the Castello degli Ezzelini, the 12th-century castle that was once the stronghold of the Ezzelini family, medieval rulers of the town, then wander the walls and panoramic corners around it. Right on the bridge, Nardini – Italy’s oldest grappa distillery, running since the 18th century – is worth a stop even if you’re not usually a grappa drinker; try the local Mezzo e Mezzo, a bittersweet mix of Prosecco with Campari or Aperol, for around €2.20. If you want to go further into the grappa world, the Poli distillery, also historic, runs its own small grappa museum nearby.

Evening – the ritual locals actually show up for: After work, Bassano gathers on and around the bridge for spritz – homemade, always with Prosecco, and always better than anything from a bottle. For dinner, Ristorante Birreria Ottone is the most characterful option in town: a 15th-century palazzo turned restaurant since 1865 by an Austrian brewer, Ottone Wipflinger, blending Veneto dishes with an Austro-Hungarian menu and beer list that still feels genuinely different from anywhere else nearby.
